GICLÉE PRINTING BASICS

Giclée (jhee-clay) is derived from the French verb giclér meaning to squirt or to spray.  The term “giclée print” characteristically defines a very high quality printing technology.  Images are very high resolution digital scans printed with archival quality inks onto various substrates (papers or canvas).

All prints sold by Julia O'Reilly are Limited Edition prints, signed and numbered.  When the edition is complete, no more prints will be run from that image.

MORE ABOUT GICLÉE

The giclée process provides more accurate color than other means of reproduction.

Artwork can be reproduced to almost any size and on various media, giving the artist the ability to customize prints for a specific client. Image permanence is a concern to artists and collectors.  Julia O'Reilly  personally selects papers and inks for their permanence ratings, and for the texture and beauty of the paper and print. Julia requires that the longevity rating be not less than 75 – 100 years under normal indoor lighting conditions.  All inks and dyes will fade over time, as will pigments and paints.  Therefore it is important always to keep artworks away from direct sunlight.  Works on paper are best archivally framed under glass to provide protection from ultraviolet rays, moisture and dust.  This is also true for original paintings or reproductions of any other kind.

There are several research firms who are working to develop and refine the giclée technology, and who are continually testing papers and inks for the qualities necessary for color accuracy and durability.
