Oregon Coast, Plein Air Painting September 2022

September 2022, Workshop & Retreat

4 days and 3 nights (Thursday - Sunday)

The Oregon coast is known for its drama and the amazing variety of forest and sea ecosystems that stretch along its expanse.  There are sandy beaches, rock formations, sea caves, dunes, and miles of beach to walk, not to mention miles of trails in old growth coastal forests.  Lighthouses, of course!

The charming town of Yachats (say YAH-hots) is named after the Yachats River, and sits at the base of the Oregon Coast Range along the Pacific. It's home to artist galleries and gift shops and hiking trails at gorgeous Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, the highest point of the Oregon Coast.  It also provides easy driving access to many awe-inspiring and paintable views.

Your room is steps away from the famous 804 Trail, with wonderful step-out areas and views for setting up an easel.

All Experience Levels welcome

This workshop-retreat is open to beginners and advanced artists.

We'll explore the power of color to create light, space, mass, dynamic movement, and feeling!

My demonstrations will use gouache (my favorite plein air paint), but you’re welcome to bring your own medium favorite paints or medium, or get supplied from our optional gouache kit of paint, brushes and papers.  We’ll have a suggested list of supplies closer to the trip.  (No acrylics or oils for painting indoors for this one, please.

We'll have loads of time for relaxing, and time to discuss our work.

Non-painting spouses or partners of attendees are welcome to join us as guests for no additional workshop fees (excluding meals). You pay only for your room.

Good To Know

Weather can vary hugely, so be prepared for sun, wind, and rain in September and early October.

September can be a good time to see our resident gray whales as they come close to shore for feeding.

Comfortable safe walking shoes are a good idea.  Maybe a couple of pair.  And I always take extra socks.

Remember your camera, phone and charger!

Bring your own travel easels, chair and gear.  We will have an optional gouache paint kit which will be available closer to the workshop, if you'd like to try your hand with gouache but don't know which colors or brushes or surfaces to buy.

And a safety reminder: pay attention to tide charts and warnings. Respect the mighty power of Mother Ocean.

What is Gouache?

Gouache is a water-soluble medium similar to watercolor, but toothier and opaque (so you can paint light colors over dark colors!). Gouache is a wonderfully flexible and toothy medium that allows for transparency control and a wide range of textural application. We'll have an option for a gouache painting kit, if you'd like to jump in and try this exciting medium.
